Italian producers have moved rapidly to the forefront of world Enology, improving techniques to create wines of undeniable class in every region, North, Central and South. Their wines derive not only from native vines, which represent an enormous array, but also from a complete range of International varieties.

Italian Wine Guide

Ah, Italy - what a beautiful, hedonistic, disorganised, frustrating country! Italy can provide wine lovers with so many distinctive, unique flavours and styles, bottles full of Italian verve and creativity. It also sluices forth rivers of disgracefully thin, characterless stuff to be sold under its most commercially useful names: Pinot Grigio, Soave, Valpolicella, Lambrusco, Frascati and the like.

Although the key to understanding Italy is to understand that it is a group of regions rather than a single homogeneous country, from the heady, often sweet, ferments of the deep south to the delicate sub-alpine essences of the north, it is possible to generalise about Italian wine styles to a certain extent. Reds have a certain bitterness that is by no means unpleasant. In fact it is so addictive that I find Italy is the one country I come home from positively determined to continue to drink its wines (rather than, as usual, desperate for a complete change). Italian white wines, once distinguished by their lack of aroma and lack of obvious fruitiness (very un-modern), are now generally very well made, offering an attractive combination of fruit and refreshment.

Making an Italian wine guide that covers the whole of the country in just one web page is almost an impossible task. There is hardly an inch of Italy that couldn't ripen grapes suitable for wine, and consequently there are a myriad of classified regions producing a diverse array of wines, some of which are rarely seen outside of Italy. Consequently, this guide to Italian wine focuses just on the country's most prominent wines. I deal with each Italian wine region in turn, from the expensive and age-worthy wines of Barolo in the north, to the bargain glugging wines of the south. But first, a note on the Italian wine classifications.

Understanding Italian labels

bianco white.

cantina means literally 'cellar' or 'winery'. A Cantina Sociale is a co-operative winery.

Classico, usually the original heartland of a wine zone. Something to head for.

cru is, especially in Piedmont, a specially designated vineyard.

DOC, Denominazione di Origine Controllata, Italy's failed attempt at a system of distinguishing its superior wines fashioned in the image of France's appellation contrôlée. Some argue it was imposed too early and too strictly, others that it was too late and not strictly enough. The truth is probably that the Italians do not willingly submit to regulation. For the consumer, DOC means precious little, for in many DOCs the allowed yields are often far too high to concentrate quality in the resulting wines.

DOCG, Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, the super-DOC category introduced for the 1982 vintage and to which some DOCs have since been promoted. DOCG wines are reliably among Italy's better bottles though promotions have sometimes been purely political.

frizzante, lightly sparkling.

IGT, Indicazione Geografica Tipica, a category of wines created in 1992 as an approximate equivalent of the French Vin de Pays.

liquoroso, strong, usually fortified.

metodo classico or metodo tradizionale, bottle-fermented (sparkling wine).

passito, strong (and usually sweet) wine made from dried grapes.

Riserva generally denotes prolonged ageing under carefully prescribed conditions.

rosso, red.

secco, dry.

spumante, sparkling.

Superiore, usually a little higher in alcohol (0.5 to 1%).

tenuta, wine estate or smallholding.

vendemmia, vintage.

vendemmia tardiva, late harvest.

Vino da Tavola, Italy's supposedly basic table wine category, designed to be on a par with France's Vin de Table. In the 1980s and 1990s it included a significant proportion of Italy's best wines, which didn't conform to any DOC regulations, especially but by no means exclusively in Tuscany (the so-called Supertuscans). Many such wines are now classified as IGT.

Winegrowing Zones:

Northwest - most famous for the Piedmont region the Northwest also has the regions of Val d'Aosta, Lombardy, Liguria and Emilia-Romagna to its credit. Piedmont is famous for its Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo grape. Its Dolcettos and Barbera, both lighter and less expensive, should not be overlooked either. Emilia-Romagna is familiar to many Americans for its sparkling Lambrusco.

Northeast - within this zone are the three regions: Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which are known collectively as the Tre Venezie. Veneto is Italy's largest producer of D.O.C wines. All three regions are affected by the Alps which shield the zone from the cool, damp European weather. Winemaking here is characterized by modern efficiency relative to other Italian regions. This adherence to quality standards has paid off with a booming export market for the Venezie. Like all of Italy a wide variety of grapes are grown here with many native as well as international varietals. Some of the best known regions within this zone are Soave, Valpolicella, Bardolino and Prosecco.

Central - this winegrowing zone contains six regions: Tuscany, Umbria, Marches, Abruzzo, Latium and Molise. The Sangiovese grape reigns supreme throughout this zone. Tuscany is without a doubt the most well known region within this zone with Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the ubiquitous Chianti. Trebbiano and Orvieto are perhaps the most favored white grapes in this zone. Recently international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc as well as Pinot Noir have been planted with favorable results.

South - this zone contains the regions of Sicily, Apulia, Sardinia, Calabria, Basillcata and Campania. Both Apulia and Sicily compete for the highest volume producing region in Italy. Most of these grapes are used for non-wine products such as industrial alcohol. Quality has been improving recently as yields are reduced, however. Given the South's previous reputation for poor quality there are many good bargains currently on the market as producers focus on a better product for the Italian wine export market.

Italian Red Wines:
Bold, Full-bodied, and Delicious - From lush, deep red Chiantis to light, fruity Bardolinos, Italy produces some of the world's best red wine. Perfect to add extra luster to Italy's rich cuisine, Italy offers variety, quality, and style.

As we already know, Italy has very diverse wine-growing regions. The cool, mountainous northern region of Piedmont produces crisp, austere wines, whereas the sunny, temperate central region of Tuscany yields bold, lusty, full-bodied sensations. Italian wines have a complexity and earthiness that reflects the soil, the unique Italian grape varietals, and Italian winemaker craft. Over sixty percent of the wine grown in Italy is red wine. Chianti, Amarone, Barolo,B or arbaresco: Italy offers a myriad of tasty choices.

Italian White Wines
Have a character all of their own. Crisp, soft, and highly acidic, they are made to accompany food, not overpower it. Even Italian wines made from grapes popular elsewhere, such as Chardonnay, take on a slightly different, richer character when grown in Italian soil.

Italy's best white wines are grown, primarily, in the three regions called collectively, "Tre Venezie" (literally, three Venices:) Veneto, Trentino Alto-Adige, and Fruili-Venezia Guilia, as well as in Piedmont. The cooler northern climate of these areas adds the crisp flavor to these wines.

These white wines offer variety and unique flavors. The next time you visit your neighborhood wine store, think Italian and try something different. Sample one of these outstanding wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir grapes make full, rich red wines. Merlot grapes produce lighter, softer red wines. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grapes make white wines.

As a practice in wine making, good wines generally have their year of production on the bottle. This is called the vintage. Some years produce better wines than others.

Almost all the red wines get better in quality as they get older, some even as long as ten years. And most of the red wines are not made available until about two years after they were made. Although, most white wines do not improve in quality with aging except champagne and sweet dessert wines.

Wines can be enjoyed like any other drink, but they are often consumed with a meal. For full flavored meats such as beef choose a full red wine, like a Zinfandel, Cabernet or Syrah.

For lighter meat like pork or lamb a medium bodied red like a Merlot or Pinot Noir is usually a good choice.

Chicken and fish are in general accompanied by white wine like Chardonnay. This wine will also go with a non-meat dish, as would a Zinfandel or Riesling.

White and sparkling wines are best served when they are cold. A red wine should be served when it is slightly below room temperature. Both wines are best left to stand before opening. Some red wines have sediment which should stay at the bottom of the bottle, and an agitated sparkling wine is often much too eager to leave the bottle.

White wine can be served immediately after removing the cork, but a red wine gain from 'breathing'
for about thirty minutes after the bottle is opened. For optimum result cautiously pour the red wine into another container. This make allowance for greater surface area of the wine to breathe and leave the deposit behind in the bottle. If you do not have a decanter, pour half a glass from the bottle and let both stand for 15 to 30 minutes before serving.

The area of Graves gets its name from the soil. Graves are a mix of gravels, clay and sand carried out by the river. Graves appellation is located just outside the town of Bordeaux. The red wines of Graves are recognizable by their garnet-red color, rich, attractive and more robust than the other Médoc wines. Two third of Graves wines are white. Among the best white wines in Bordeaux, they are generally fresh, fruity and dry (some time half-dry). The appellation of "Graves supérieurs" is strictly reserved to sweet white wines. People vary in their tastes in wine, just as with everything else. But among newcomers to wine, probably the majority start with liking sweet white. White somehow seems "safer"!

On the other hand, liking red wine seems to some people to be a more sophisticated taste. Not every newcomer likes red wine at first. So if you want to "get into" red wine, where do you start?

· Start with good quality. If you're not used to the taste of red wine, you definitely won't like it if it's poor quality. It might put you off for ever! This probably means avoiding the cheaper varieties.

· Drink it with food rather than on its own - at least to start. You many enjoy a red Bordeaux or Rhone with beef or steak, and Rhone or Burgundy with game. (Unless these are accompanied by a fruit sauce such as cranberry, when a Cru Beaujolais might be better.) Pairing wine with food is very individual and you will need to experiment. This is just something to try when you start.

· For many people, new world reds are more "accessible" to start with. They are more fruity, higher in alcohol and have a sweet component. The oak makes them softer and more approachable. Some good ones to start with: California Cabernet Sauvignon; Sonoma Zinfandel; Sonoma Pinot; Feltzer wines; Australian Shiraz.

When you have developed a taste for some of these, you can graduate to some of the best old world wines. Cabernet Sauvignon - Medoc; Beaujolais - Villages; or Pinot Noir - Burgundy. You may be better leaving a wine like Chianti till you are more used to red wine. If you start with Chianti you may not like it. Many people, even serious wine buffs, regard Chianti as an acquired taste! ( But well worth acquiring.)

If you really want to "discover" red wine, keep experimenting till you find one you REALLY like. Don't pretend, or you just won't enjoy it.

Of course, at the end of the day, you may find you just don't like red wine! Well, there's nothing wrong with that. There are lots of superb white wines to enjoy, and you can spend a lifetime discovering them.

Monbazillac is produced in the Dordogne area of southwest France. At its best it can be a match for the seriously expensive and often overpriced Sauternes of the Bordeaux wine appellation immediately next door geographically.

Monbazillac is typically luscious and, as it ages, it develops lovely rounded honeyed flavors. It is often served with locally made fois gras (literally translated as fat liver) for which the Dordogne is famous. If you do not like or object to eating fois gras on ethical grounds, the wine can be matched with a range of desserts and even cheese, such as blue salty Roquefort; the sweetness of the wine off-setting and complementing the saltiness of the cheese.

Since leaving the UK some years ago I have lived in southwest France near Bordeaux, and have taken many a local drive out into the Dordogne with local wine experts to enjoy these wines.

Chateau Monbazillac - The daddy of the region producing some excellent wines. The Chateau itself is fantastic and well worth a visit, and guided tours are available. An opulent wine that really delivers on flavor and one of the best wines of the Monbazillac region in my opinion.

Chateau Pech la Calevie - This is my all time favorite in terms of value for money versus quality. I am drinking the 2005 at the moment although I have stocks of 2006. I have enjoyed this wine at our local Chateau with Roquefort in the cheese course, followed by crepes suzettes.

Chateau Les Sablines - This wine is a bargain. It is perhaps not as complex as some of the other wines listed, however at around EUR5 (under per bottle) for a 50cl bottle you really can't go wrong.

Chateau Septy - A fantastic wine honeyed with overtones of tropical fruit. The 2006 I am drinking at the moment is fantastic, and it is not stupidly expensive. Although I have not tried the combination, I think it would be lovely with citrus based tarts and desserts.

Chateau le Thibaut - This lovely example of sweet dessert wine is golden and has aromas of peach and pear. It is best served with not too sweet desserts as it is fresher on the palate in comparison to some of the heavier wines of the region.

I really missed California as I was thumbing through Jill Silverman Hough's book,'100 Perfect Pairings.' Hough, a teacher and food writer from Napa, CA, has put together a book featuring dozens of easy yet artful recipes and provides just enough wine pairing information to enable a food lover to select a wine with confidence.

The recipes that caught my eye were my kind of food - simple to prepare, but had just one or two ingredients that vaulted them from "that tastes good" to "ooh, what's in there." The fresh corn with citrus butter, a match for Sauvignon Blanc, adds the zest of an orange, lemon and lime to unsalted butter. Cinnamon cream cheese sandwiches are recommended as an afternoon pairing with a glass of Gewurztraminer. Syrah is a match for a salami, mozzarella, walnut and herb topped pizza.

The recipes are the star of this book, but I absolutely loved the way the author presented several essential food and wine pairing tips in the sections 'A Really Brief Discussion of Food and Wine Pairing,' and 'Fine Tuning Tips.' This part of the book, just a short four pages, gives food and wine pairing novices many of the tools I teach at my food and wine pairing classes.

I recently purchased and read "The Sweet Life in Paris" by David Lebovitz. Wow. That's all I can say, wow!. It is a fantastic book. First of all it has some amazing recipes to accompany the stellar writing. (Especially the one for Chocolat chaud, yummy!) Being a frequent visitor of Paris myself I really feel that his tips and experiences are very true to life and useful. Fantastic easy read. Definitely worth it.

Excellent book. A good addition to any chef-in-training's repitior of cookbooks. I keep this book around as a reference for design plating inspirations and to expose my growing vocabulary of exotic ingredients.

Its also nice to see a Canadian authoring such books of high skill level amongst the more simpler books (ie Canadian Living). The Dubey's are masters in their fields, chocolate, and I had the honor of meeting them during a demonstrations.

This book comes highly recommended by a student of the arts.

Wine has become a very popular drink. Sales over the last decade in the United States have increased by over ten billion dollars! While Americans consumption of the fruity alcohol has raised their ability to successfully pair it with food has remained about the same. For new aficionados pairing wines with the food dish that will accent both equally is an exceedingly difficult task. Thankfully, the book market is starting to recognize the need and has begun publishing simple books to help wine and food lovers to enjoy both their hobbies concurrently.

Jill Silverman Hough's //100 Perfect Pairings// is an excellent example. Hough's book is so great because it isn't written for wine geeks or food buffs, it's simple and in its simplicity it opens up the world of wine pairing to the rest of us who are bewildered by all those Sommeliers books. //100 Perfect Pairings// has an introduction to wine pairings and talks about how the attributes of wine work with food flavors and quickly delves into delicious recipes and the wines that best accompany them. It being summer I especially enjoyed the pinot grigio and chardonnay sections of the book, though both reds and whites are dealt with. An excellent introduction to wine pairing.

I would recommend this book to anyone but perhaps in particular the pairing novice. Jill's recipe writing is always clear and concise. You feel that she is sitting in the room with you giving instruction and hints. Coupled with her clear and simple wine descriptions and why the foods included in the book pair well, you'll be on your way to pairing on your own. This little gem also works in reverse, you have a bottle of wine and what would go well with it. One a recent afternoon three friends and I paired six dishes with five wines and (with minor recommended in the book tweaks to two) they were indeed perfect pairings.

After all the positive things I had heard about Stevia, I decided to give it a whirl. Coming by good Stevia recipes is quite difficult ... perhaps because many people don't know about it and/or because it doesn't taste exactly like sugar. I have tried several recipes out of this cookbook, and I haven't liked all of them. So why am I giving it 5 stars? Because it beats the competition. Also, I think that if you have never had Stevia before it takes awhile to acquire a taste for it. The recipes that I liked the most were ones that had another "sweet" ingredient in it to help dampen the bitterness of the Stevia. For example, I love the Carob Chip Cookies, Carob Brownies, the fruit sauces and the oatmeal banana bread. I did not like the coconut peanut butter cookies or the lemon pudding. If you try a recipe and do not like it, don't give up! Move onto the next one and try again!

I loved this book. The stories are so warm, and give you a real picture of the author, they make the recipes more fun. My wife and I have a Cuisinart ice cream maker that we use regularly for both personal desserts and when we have guest over to enjoy. I am always looking for a new ice cream book that has a few outstanding recipes. We have worked our way through most of a Williams Sonoma book and a gelato book I came across somewhere that had some fun recipes.
I found this book on Amazon and can't rave enough about it. It gives very good instructions in the first section on how to get the basics right like making a nice custard for your ice cream base, it goes over ingredients and then it gets to the fun stuff! This is a book that will satisfy both folks who are just starting to make ice cream and those that have been doing it for years.
I suggest trying the fresh peach, the rocky road, the cheesecake and a few of the berry recipes just to get your feet wet. After you get going you really won't want to stop trying the many recipes unless you find your belt is getting a little tight. I like that the author isn't afraid to be creative and uses ingredients like sour cream, beer (like Guinness Stout), tea and whiskey just to name a few.
I would not hesitate to get this book but please remember not to be afraid to experiment on your own too. Enjoy!

The title of this book might as well be "Sweet and Savory Baking on the Moon" because it has just as much to do with Swedish baking. Yes, the author is part Swedish and that's apparently where she lives and is on TV, but that's about it from what I can tell. Most of the recipes are French, English, and tons of Italian with a few Swedish sprinkled in. If I wasn't expecting Swedish recipes, I'd probably like this book better. It has lots of color pictures and the recipes look good. On the technical side, this book is printed on matte paper, so you don't get those great glossy pictures that are so much fun to look at. It feels kind of cheap -- like one of those Food Network books.

Getting a cookbook in the mail is like receiving a gift. It is not just a book but an object to display on a coffee table or kitchen counter. It is a gift that gives you a desire to eat, call for a reservation at a fine restaurant or simply stroll the grocery aisles for something delicious. The Sweet Life by Kate Zuckerman is just that gift.

The contents page is easy to navigate. The mouthwatering pictures make you want to throw your apron on and get cooking. I was hesitant because I am not Martha Stewart--a food lover for sure, but not a true cook. I was scared I couldn't recreate any of the recipes to look like the pictures I was drooling over.

I thought I would try the Chocolate Bete Noir. "Dense and creamy, yet light and elegant, this flourless chocolate cake is remarkably versatile; it serves as the basis of many of my plated chocolate desserts at Chanterelle." I thought how hard could this be. The first step after heating the oven, which I am quite capable of, reads: "Using a paring knife, cut down the center of the vanilla bean and scrape out the tiny black seed into a heavy-bottomed saucepan."

Next!! Chocolate chip cookies are more my speed. The recipe for Crispy, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies was easy to follow and they turned out fabulous. I will say "two inches apart on the prepared cookie sheet" means two inches apart. Anything less and you have one big cookie.

What I loved about this book was it is educational as well as beautiful. The history of chocolate on page 31 I found very interesting. The Beyond the Basics area with subjects such as "Chocolate and water," and "Cooking caramel successfully" can be a lesson in science as well as cooking. The Technique Tip section of this cookbook is what separates the good cook from the talented chef.

The Sweet Life is a sweet gift for your friend or family member who always impresses you with their skills in the kitchen. Me, I will just make a reservation at Chanterelle and see what I am missing.

I love cookbooks, and my husband and I have tons of them that we mainly read and then occasionally consult for a particular recipe, but there are few that we really use. This will be one of them. It is not only a great and informative book to read, but it has a large collection of recipes that are easy to make even though the author cooks at Chanterelle -- a haute cuisine restaurant if there ever was one. I made the sour cream spiced apple cake this morning to bring to a New Year's Day lunch, and it came out perfectly with nary a hitch. This is one of the best dessert books that I have ever used. I am thrilled to add it to my collection and it will live in the kitchen, not on the bookshelf!

However, if this is the first and Carole Walters book, you are buying, this is certainly a very decent and economical way to get her recipe extensive sampling. This book is a must have for anyone who likes to experiment with desserts in the kitchen. While not always easy, most of the desserts are approachable, and the author gives many useful substitutions if one does not want to make all of the individual components. Also, and this is a big plus, the recepies are all given in cups and ounces, easy to measure, instead of the annoying trend of many other high-end cookbooks where all the measurements are given in metric weight. (Who wants to measure out lbs of water? Or 32 grams of strawberries?) The best part about the book though is the insight into the chef's creative process. I don't think I've ever read another cookbook where the author gives as much explanation into the thoughts behind his work. I love Thomas Keller's books for this reason, and this book is in that same vein. I've only had the book a few days, and I've already made several different components with great success. I put off buying this book for awhile; I'm glad I didn't wait any longer.

This is a most appropriate way to begin the study of Italian wine - the theoretical part, that is. The book is concise yet clear and understandable, despite a substantial amount of new terminology. I use it also as a reference for choosing new Italian wines, when in a wine store. I LOVED this book! Sylvia Weinstock is the most incredible cake decorator/baker in the world today - or maybe ever! I found the directions very straightforward and easy to understand. In Petite Sweets Ojakangas shows us how to make miniature versions of some of the most decadent and sinful desserts and sweets around. From planning the dessert menu and equipment basics to tips on ingredients it's all covered with large full color photos.

Cooking and baking have always been hit or miss with me. I love to do it but even if I follow the recipe exactly I don't always get the best results. Some of my more memorable dishes have been my Lemon Meringue Soup when trying to make my favorite pie and most recently when following my grandma's light and fluffy gordita recipe I ended up with what my husband called "biscuits with meat". LOL My son even nicknamed me "burner girl" because he was always scraping the burnt parts off his favorite grilled cheese sandwiches.

Petite Sweets has plenty of easy to follow recipes and for my review I tried the Mini Cream Puffs. There were just a few basic ingredients and I filled mine with vanilla pudding so in no time flat I had a tiny version of one of my favorite treats with almost no mess to clean up afterwards. My cream puffs were light, fluffy, golden brown and perfectly flaky and I actually surprised myself at how good they tasted.

One major plus is that since I've been dieting I've cut all sweets and goodies out of my diet. With Petite Sweets I was able to satisfy my sweet tooth without all the guilt that I would have had with the full size version.

In each of the categories below there are many more great recipes that have caught my eye and next up for me will be the Fresh Lime Pies made in mini muffin tins which will be just big enough to satisfy my craving while still being good.

I normally have a great affinity for any cake decorating book, but as I have progressed in my knowledge and skills, I have learned what "industry secrets" are needed to truly educate. Unfortunately, Ms. Weinstock only offers information in the guise of wanting to share, but in reality, she gives very little.

Much of what is in the book is very generic information on cake decorating. There is little actual teaching because I feel that in the world of Master Cake Decorating, there is a fierce competition and trade secrets are heavily guarded.

She shows you several complex cakes that many people simply will not be able to replicate, due to the intense detail and need for training/education that it requires. You need tools and recipes and formulas and knowledge, which she has failed to impart. Yes, there are the obligatory simple recipes and basic skills given, but you do not get a true cake decorating education.

This is a nice book for working towards the skills needed to reach those fabulous looking creations, but do not expect much in the way of education. If you wish detailed instruction and education, there are several other wonderful books in which to choose.

I bought this book to give to my Louisiana-born mother-in-law, but I'm tempted to keep it for myself. The stories are delightful, the photos are beautiful, but the recipes are the real star of the show here. If you grew up eating southern food, you'll find your old favorites (fried chicken, cheese grits, banana pudding) plus some updated versions of classics, and lots of fresh ideas, too! I'll be making curried sweet potato soup this weekend, and I can't wait for summer so I can try a cantaloupe daiquiri! Martha Hall Foose adds a generous helping of her own charming personality; her wit makes the book fun to read. An example: she warns us against the cheap vanilla wafers, saying "banana pudding is no time to be a skinflint." I couldn't agree more. Take this book into the kitchen or curl up on the sofa--you'll enjoy it either way.

South-western France is up and coming wine region. There are about 10 million bottles of Madiran AOC produced in an area of about 3200 acres (1300 hectares), facing the Pyrenees mountains. This particular wine comes from the southernmost parts of the region and is made of 50% Tannat and 50% Cabernet Franc grapes. You can guess from its name, the Tannat grape variety is very tannic. Roger Corder, in his famous book "The Wine Diet" published in 2007, 3 pages devoted to one wineand that wine is Madiran. He did not want to apply to this particular manufacturer. Corder talks about technology, micro-oxygenation, which is used to reduce the ferocity of tannins without reducing the levels of some chemicals, ostensibly to be good for the heart, when the wine is consumed in moderation.

Chateeau Peyros Magenta Madiran 2006 13.8% alcohol$ 10

Let's start by quoting the marketing materials. Tasting Note: The combination of local Tannat and Cabernet Franc grapes, the secular, the castle is Peyros Madiran is remarkably soft and round, with regard Tannat is a rugged character. Filled with cherries, raspberries and plums, this dry, fruity, balanced wine has a nice right now. Elegant wine that deserves an elegant cut-grilled rare beef or lamb. (Year panel, July 2009). And now for my review.

At first sipThe wine was strong with strong tannins. But the tannins are not unpleasant tannins, probably because the wine's acidity. The first meal involved in the London Broil meat, potato patties and green beans all cooked together slowly. Madiran was Plum and Grape, and now acid was somewhat harsh, and at the edge. With canned corn, chickpeas, celery, sliced palm hearts salad and the wine was thinner and tannins were almost gone.

Another meal consisted of roasted merguez, a spicy,North fatty lamb sausages, potatoes, meatballs, salad, and salsa. With meat, the wine was strong, but not too acidic. It was round and soft. Potato patties Madiran reduced acidity, but increased their fruit. When I joined the Louisiana cayenne sauce on meat (I like spicy, but I'm no bigot) of wine has lost some power. With a salad with wine was quite long and refreshing.

My last meal of boiled beef ribs accompanied involved slowly baked potatoes in chickenfat. Wines displayed good balance between acidity and tannins. Presented a sweet dark cherries and a little tobacco. Processed potatoes, good wine and grease I tasted plums. The Turkish salad consisting of fresh beans, tomato paste, chili peppers (very little) garlic and Madiran lost some of its fruits.

Before the traditional two cheeses, I enjoyed a few herring oil with onions. The wine was round with some oak. Not bad. In combination with Swiss cheese, it tasteddark cherry and some oak. Then I tried goat cheese, which was made with roasted garlic. The wine was round and barely sour taste of cherries.

Final verdict. This wine was nothing special, if you go to health. Because I had to pay more than $ 10 I do not think I'd go for it again. I was surprised to see Madiran at $ 60, which was evaluated at 93 from Wine Spectator. Although I am now reviewing wines in this price range do not plan tobuy a Madiran.

Memories! The cover of the paperback edition has a strawberry, pink, cake on the cover. The minute I saw the cover I was taken in and once I opened the book to a random page and got a glance of the recipes inside, I was immediately transported back to my childhood and my family. Standing there in the bookstore, I immediately wanted to run home and begin baking these delectable desserts. I bought the book and I love the recipes and its contents. Ms. Patty Piner needs to take things a step further and write a Novel. I adored reading the stories about her family. The feeling I get reading it is just as fantastic as the recipes!
By far, the best and most complete soul food dessert book I've ever seen.
All of her "Ainties, Uncles and Cudn's" brought those stories to life.
I will be getting the hardcover version of this book as well as purchasing it for gift giving! Update: Made the "MY-MY'S" cake and it was delicious! Moist, tasty, makes a great birthday cake. The frosting given with the cake was also unique and tasty, albeit, labor intensive as some of the recipes are, but I think that's what gives the book its charm. (After all, they lacked modern appliances). I also tried the recipe with my own version of vanilla frosting, umm good! I've made this cake 3x in less than a month.

This book has pretty cakes for all occassions that if you are willing to do some work making flowers, bows, etc., will walk you through it - Some of the cakes are not my 'cup of tea' but it gave me more info than the Colette books.

I often think about what kind of literary voice a cookbook author is striving for before I read the cookbook for the first time. In the case of Beatrice Ojakangas, who wrote "Petite Sweets," as a "James Beard Cookbook hall-of-fame author" I'm sure she wanted to sound authoritative as in "I know my stuff," but to me, once I read through the whole book, she also sounded 'motherly." An unusual voice for a cookbook author.

While there are no nutritional tables in the book to let her readers know how much one of her bite-size morsels will cost them in ounces and/or pounds when they reluctantly step on a scale, you can tell from some of the recipe's ingredients, such as in "Angel Cakes with Lemon Sauce," which makes 24 servings, that it won't put you into a deep, dark, depressing funk because you lost control and ate one or two.

Learning how to downsize desserts, your own, or making Little Cakes, Petite Pies & Tarts, Fruit & Berry Desserts, Mousses and Chilled Desserts, Creams, Custards and Frozen Desserts to Pastries and Sweets from her dessert recipe book with gorgeous photographs by Roger LePage is one of the newest food trends and Ojakangas is leading the way with her 2009 thin but masterful book.

Buy the book, try all of the recipes if you can find the time and enjoy eating one of each or sampling several. Take Ojakangas and her publisher's word for it, that's good advice. Maybe even - motherly?

If you are a wine-snob wanna-be, this is the perfect book to start your journey with. Written in an easy to understand language, a non-pretentious approach to a quite challenging topic. Becoming a wine connoisseur can be a very ambitious thing to do, but this book definitely puts things in perspective as far as Italian wines go.
I really enjoy reading it before opening up a bottle of a wine that I'm trying for the first time. Also a nice reference if you plan on starting a fun little wine club with your friends.
If you're interested in knowing more about wine in general, I would also like to recommend the Wine for Dummies which is an extremely good value for the information that is presented.

I ordered this book because it was the only cookbook I could find that included a recipe for Opera Cake. Opera Cake is my husband's favorite dessert, and so I thought I would make it for his birthday. Well, unfortunately, I learned that the recipe for Opera Cake actually has six (yes, SIX) subrecipes, and would probably take me about 3 days to make ... and with a new baby, I wouldn't have three days to spend on a dessert. So the Opera Cake, the original rationale for getting the book, never got made. But still, I found it somehow heartening that such a complicated recipe could be broken down into readable and comprehensible component parts ... something that a mere mortal could actually reproduce in her own American home kitchen - if she had three days and didn't happen to have a newborn to cater to, that is.

One small disappointment was that Greenspan doesn't give a recipe for almond macaroons (macarons), which were my favorite treat when I spent a little time in France. She just gives a lengthy description of how wonderful they are and says they are hard for the home cook to reproduce. I know she is right in saying so, as I did try to make them once at home using the recipe in Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook, and they turned nothing like the ones I'd had in France and I considered that recipe a failure. Still, on Amazon.fr there are about 20 different single-subject cookbooks in French on making macarons at home, so I still hold out hope that it's actually possible and I'll find a good recipe someday (or get around to ordering one of the French-language macaron treatises).

That said, this cookbook is a delight in every other way. The book is partly a travelogue describing the atmosphere and offerings at Paris's most famous patisseries, and her writing is so evocative, and so charmingly illustrated with line drawings, that you while reading you tend to feel as if you were standing in front of a gleaming case of sweetly scented pastries with a rotund pastry chef behind the counter sending up clouds of artisanal flour as you contemplate your order in line behind an elegant femme in couture high-heels leading a poodle on a leash.

Along with the travelogue descriptions you get the occasional informative discourse on ingredients such as chocolate and flour and eggs and how the ones the French pastry chefs use are different from ours.

And, of course, there are recipes, wonderful recipes. I made the choclate sables, and they were easy, and totally addictive as Greenspan warns. And I made the hot chocolate and it was so rich I had palpitations afterwards, but the taste was worth the risk of a heart attack. (And it was also easy peasy to make. I called my mom and gave her the recipe over the phone.)

Ten stars for this wonderful book.

I can't stop buying vegan/vegetarian cookbooks, and there are so many good ones without pictures, but it is so much more fun when you have glossy pictures to look at! This book is beautiful and the photography makes the food look so appetizing. So far, I've made the peanut butter cookies (more than once) and they are delicious. The texture was right on, and they disappear minutes after coming out of the over. I've also made the pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. Super simple to whip up on a lazy Sunday morning, and the kids munch on them all day. The recipes are easy to follow and the results are great. I'd recommend this book to those who need some new ideas for baking and also to those who just like to read cookbooks. You may actually be inspired to try out a recipe!

Great read! David Lebovitz tells funny and witty tales of living everyday in Paris. Every city has quirks-the good and bad and David tells us some of them that he's experienced day to day. A wonderful text covering Italian wine in an easy to read format. You may browse through the noted sections and glance over the meat if you want a cursory education on Italian wine. There are very few in depth texts on Italian wine, mainly due to the convoluted DOC system and the overabundance of native grape varieties and grape psuedonyms. The authors give a valiant effort that is worthy of a read.

IN FACT, THERE IS NEITHER A RECIPE FOR SUGAR DOUGH NOR IS THERE A REFERENCE TO A COMMERCIAL SOURCE. IT ASSUMES THE READER ALREADY HAS EXPERTISE IN SUGAR DOUGH. PERHAPS MS. WEINSTOCK IS LOATHE TO PART WITH HER "SUGAR DOUGH SECRETS". IN ANY EVENT, I FELT CHEATED BY THIS GLARING OMISSION.

Chef David Lebovitz dares all by leaving a comfy home and work life in San Francisco, sells everything that won't fit into a suitcase, and moves to Paris! This book is part storybook, part tour book, part gossip, part cautionary tale, part cookbook, and ALL FUN!! This is a very enjoyable "sit on the couch on a rainy day and drink cocoa and read" type of book- the only reason I recommend a rainy day is that reading the book is so cozy, you will not want to put it down!! It is such a fun read! This dear man loves food, people, and Paris!! Makes you want to zip over there for at least a couple of weeks. And if you read this book, you can be sure that you will truly go "well armed!" The book contains tip on particularly enjoyable restaurants, cafes, chocolate shops, and a very bold interpretation on Parisian culture and nuances from a standpoint us Americans can understand and will be GRATEFUL for!! In example, if you've ever been to Paris, you have no doubt been bumped and pushed while waiting in line for...well...ANYTHING! And you've no doubt seen TONS of Parisians simply and boldly cut in front of the head of the line! One of the cultural gems explained in this book is an explanation for this phenomenon, and what one might do about it! This little nugget, and some WONDERFUL and EASY to play with recipes can be found in this wonderful and playful book.

I was given a copy of the book as a gift from a friend in the States. Mrs. Weinstock did my wedding cake and I was so thrilled that she finally wrote a book! The cake recipes were easy to follow, but most of all I really appreciated the diagrams for the sugar figures and flowers. It was an easy read and easy to follow. I think Mrs Weinstock is a true artist and culinary expert. Thank goodness it was not just another coffee table book of impossible cakes to make! Thank you, Sylvia!

Fun if you assume the author is right about everything. If you know Paris and like France, then, not so much. Full of "I can't believe the French haven't figured out life as well as we have in Berkeley" moments, and a lot of stories that show the guy has really been there for a while. Kind of funny but also kind of sad too, it really is such a wonderful city, but there's more to liking it then putting on your good pants to take the trash out -- his big fashion insight into becoming a Parisian. Recipes look very tasty, the guy obviously knows how to bake, and it's really nice of him to allow the Parisians to annoy him so much while he cooks up a storm, while keeping an eye on himself in the mirror. Still, the story he tells about how, in his early career, he walked into the kitchen of a major restaurant in Berkeley, at the peak of the lunch hour melt down, and tried to talk to the very busy chef, got chewed out and, evidently, felt only tolerance and compassion for the chef for their not realizing how wonderful he was, is very revealing.

For most of us, the first we had ever heard of baker Melissa Murphy was when she took home the grand prize this past year on the Food Network's Edible Ornaments Contest. But the folks in Brooklyn have adored her devotion to making the finest baked goods in the five boroughs since she first opened Sweet Melissa Patisseries in 1998.

Since then, the accolades have been many. In addition to the Food Network victory, Sweet Melissa's was also honored with the Zagat award for "Best Tarts and Pies" in New York City. Melissa and her bakery have been featured in both local publications, like the New York Times, and in national periodicals like Food & Wine and Fine Cooking. On the heels of this success, Murphy is releasing her much anticipated Sweet Melissa Baking Book from Viking Studio, a division of the Penguin Group.

Flipping through an advanced copy with a friend who loves to bake gave me some true insight to the Sweet Melissa methodology. Each stunningly photographed treat brought a similar response from my friend, "Ooh, that looks good, but I would have drizzled chocolate on the plate first," or "Pretty. I bet powdered sugar would have made that even prettier." Murphy's plate presentation is fine, but not the focus. She decided years ago to concentrate on always preparing the absolute best recipe, not the trendiest. In fact, she states in the introduction, "The best food doesn't have to be challenging in its preparation, but should recall our fondest food memories."

Thumbing through the recipes myself later on gave me the chance to fully appreciate why many say Melissa Murphy is the best baker in the nation. After reading some of her creative specialties like Guinness (yes, the beer) Gingerbread and Sweet Plum Clafoutis with Almonds, I then took time to notice her takes on some of the classics ... sheer genius.

At times the narrative seems a bit cocky when you read things like, "The cakes in this chapter are so uniquely delicious, yet the ingredients are so familiar. If you make any one of the cakes from the chapter, you will become somebody's hero!" But when you observe the attention to detail, you begin to understand that Murphy is not bragging, she is stating fact. What makes Sweet Melissa's Red Velvet Cake so good? Dutch-process cocoa, red wine vinegar, and buttermilk in the cake batter. The secret to her Carrot Cake? The zest of one orange in the frosting.

The recipes used at Sweet Melissa's are not just her spin on each dish, but rather the result of lots of trial and error. Murphy has tested hundreds of versions of each delicacy she produces to find what she, and her many patrons agree are the best recipes for each. One might say that the Sweet Melissa Baking Book is a greatest hits of baking.
