I first rented the audio version of this book....after listening to it, I had to go out and buy it for my own self! Not only was it funny, it had some kick-ass recipes that I just had to try. After I bought it, I had to buy books for my friends. This is without a doubt, one of the neatest books I've ever had. It is now tattered...cause I really do use it as a cookbook!!! And can read it...like...forever./ Great read...and good recipes!

Cakes' decorating instructions in this book don't seem to be very clear to me. While the book displays beautiful cakes, it lacks information/instructions for the most beautiful ones. Personally, I found this book to be of little help. However, it could be used as reference for those who master cake decoration skills. With all the respect to the author, it has beautiful cakes with little information.

"The Sweet Melissa Baking Book," by Melissa Murphy, is a book that lives up to its subtitle: it really is filled with recipes that are bound to become everyone's favorite treats. From `Raised Waffles with Warm Brown Sugar Bananas' in the "Dessert for Breakfast" section, to `Pumpkin Bread Pudding with Caramel-Rum Raisin Sauce' in the "Sunday's Supper's Grand Finale" chapter, the goodies in this book are tempting and satisfying. The `Hazelnut Raspberry Cake' was one of the best desserts I have ever tasted, while the `Chewy Peanut Butter Cookies' were just the thing to eat with a glass of cold milk. Of all the recipes I tried, the only one I did not like was the `Whole Orange-Poppy Seed Cake', which had a bitter aftertaste, but I've heard that others have enjoyed this recipe so perhaps it's simply my taste buds that were the problem. There are only eight color photographs in the book, but recipes are written in such a clear, approachable manner that I dare say you don't need the photos to create even the most mouth-watering results. Murphy prefaces each recipe with a short story, which adds a warm, friendly feel to her instructions. I especially appreciated that she outlines how to store her cookies, muffins, cakes and other treats so that they will last as long as possible. She also includes helpful sections on how to frost multi layered cakes, toast nuts, and even make preserves from scratch. Overall this is a great book for bakers (and candy makers) of every skill level. If you're looking for a baking book that will add oomph to your collection, this is definitely one to try. I'd recommend you make the `Bee Stings' first, which are yeasted buns sprinkled with sliced almonds, drizzled with a honey caramel glaze and filled with vanilla bean pastry cream. Yum!

I am not one to write reviews on books, but after purchasing, reading, and cooking some of the recipes in this book, I had to put in my two cents worth. This is one of the best- if not the best cookbook on Southern cooking I have read in a long time. I am an avid cookbook collector, and the owner of a cafe in Arkansas. Not only are the recipes fantastic, but the stories and pictures make it all the more enjoyable. If you cook one thing out of this book, you must try the Lemon Icebox Pie. This is one of the best pie recipes I have made. I can't wait to try the banana pudding in the mason jars. If I could, I would give this cookbook 10 stars!

There is much more to French Patisseries than what I found on this book. The choice of recipes is poor, the lack of photos is a turn-off. Some of the recipes are very elaborate for the average reader and a picture of the finished product could have been an extra help. One thing I dislike about some cookbooks and this is one, is describing mouthwatering dishes or desserts, in this case, and not including the recipe.

±1±: Best Buy This is one of my favorite wine books. I like the book about Ms. Simon's articles, but also a useful list of facts and pictures - God, their access to the wine grapes, cooked food, I would like their photos. Ms. Simon's work is simple and fun to read, and for wine primer, it is hard to beat.

Unfortunately, the negative evaluation also have a point. This is not to say that this book is very organized - the organization is logical and coherent. What went wrong is the editorA content in DK, so that speculation in the table of each chapter. Terrible! The index is not correct content alternatives.
A more detailed sub-title of the directory will show a list of what the book and where to find it man. We should not make a flip book by deciphering some of it is to be deciphered, and the wine's label deal. Sigh.

In any case, there is a very good book. on Sale!

If you cannot go to Paris, then buy this book and bring some of Paris to you.

Greenspan (Baking with Julia) has done it again - another book that deciphers and presents some complicated recipes into approachable masterpieces. The recipes work (at least the ones I've tried), and I have foisted them on some of my French friends, some of whom immediately identified it and the shop the recipe came from (Earl Grey Madeleines, from Mariage Frères, for example). That constitutes success.

The book is organized cleverly, with the simpler recipes in the front, and more and more complex recipes as you work your way through. Though Greenspan does not say she is doing this by design, it is clearly the case. After each recipe, she has some tips and suggestions she calls "An American in Paris," in which she tells you things she does to make the recipe more in her own style, as an American living in Paris.

This is not a primer on French pastry, however, and you will learn little about technique; although there are many classic desserts in this book, it is not comprehensive, by any means. But that does not lessen its value.

There are some nice touches at the end of the book, too. Places to buy ingredients that might be hard to find, and of course, addresses and contact information for all the pastry shops that contributed to the book. Get out your Paris street map and start planning your next trip...

Although I loved this author team on past "Dummies" wine books, this one was a bit tedious. In the authors' defense, Italian wine is a complex and pervasive topic. The book covered every wine region and wine style in Italy and is not a book to curl up with, but rather one to utilize as a reference guide. It would be an essential piece of travel gear if one were going to Italy.

This is the first David Lebovitz book that I've purchased and now I'm a fan for life. David is funny, irreverent, witty, smart and observant. His story of leaving the States and moving to his adopted city of Paris is wonderful and inspiring. I loved all the background stuff on mastering the craft while working at the famous Chez Panisse in Berkeley. This is a real foodie's memoir -- meals remembered, life stories told in a series of food vignettes, etc. I love the way Lebovitz "explains" each recipe, setting it up in a way that makes you want to literally gallop to the kitchen and whip up some kind of something. The brownies made with confiture de lait (dulce de leche) are to die for. As are most of the recipes in this book. It's a wonderful read and you won't want it to end. More, David, more!
