I recently purchased and read "The Sweet Life in Paris" by David Lebovitz. Wow. That's all I can say, wow!. It is a fantastic book. First of all it has some amazing recipes to accompany the stellar writing. (Especially the one for Chocolat chaud, yummy!) Being a frequent visitor of Paris myself I really feel that his tips and experiences are very true to life and useful. Fantastic easy read. Definitely worth it.

David Lebovitz has an incredible writing style that captures the reader and allows him/her to live vividly through his words (fit for foodies and non-foodies alike). He transports you to Paris as you live out his experiences... all written with excellent wit & humor. I smiled my way through this book. His recipes are generous and a delight to replicate. David also lends us perspective of how to treat others when we travel... something I think will reflect well for all Americans when we are abroad. Bravo, Daveed, on this book... it truly is a gift (one I intend to give others).

The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City Best Quality

Over All Rating Reviews :
Great read! David Lebovitz tells funny and witty tales of living everyday in Paris. Every city has quirks-the good and bad and David tells us some of them that he's experienced day to day. A good observer of human behavior with fabulous recipes shuffled throughout. You laugh and then you crave chocolate a few minutes later! Makes me want to visit Paris even more to feel the "real" city, not just the storybook, romantic fairytale that we've been brainwashed to believe! Loved it :)

Chef David Lebovitz dares all by leaving a comfy home and work life in San Francisco, sells everything that won't fit into a suitcase, and moves to Paris! This book is part storybook, part tour book, part gossip, part cautionary tale, part cookbook, and ALL FUN!! This is a very enjoyable "sit on the couch on a rainy day and drink cocoa and read" type of book- the only reason I recommend a rainy day is that reading the book is so cozy, you will not want to put it down!! It is such a fun read! This dear man loves food, people, and Paris!! Makes you want to zip over there for at least a couple of weeks. And if you read this book, you can be sure that you will truly go "well armed!" The book contains tip on particularly enjoyable restaurants, cafes, chocolate shops, and a very bold interpretation on Parisian culture and nuances from a standpoint us Americans can understand and will be GRATEFUL for!! In example, if you've ever been to Paris, you have no doubt been bumped and pushed while waiting in line for...well...ANYTHING! And you've no doubt seen TONS of Parisians simply and boldly cut in front of the head of the line! One of the cultural gems explained in this book is an explanation for this phenomenon, and what one might do about it! This little nugget, and some WONDERFUL and EASY to play with recipes can be found in this wonderful and playful book.

I have probably purchased more than 25 of these books to give as gifts. I live in France part of the year and everything he says is true. So amusing "the French", but nice. A quick read. I didn't want it to end.

Fun if you assume the author is right about everything. If you know Paris and like France, then, not so much. Full of "I can't believe the French haven't figured out life as well as we have in Berkeley" moments, and a lot of stories that show the guy has really been there for a while. Kind of funny but also kind of sad too, it really is such a wonderful city, but there's more to liking it then putting on your good pants to take the trash out -- his big fashion insight into becoming a Parisian. Recipes look very tasty, the guy obviously knows how to bake, and it's really nice of him to allow the Parisians to annoy him so much while he cooks up a storm, while keeping an eye on himself in the mirror. Still, the story he tells about how, in his early career, he walked into the kitchen of a major restaurant in Berkeley, at the peak of the lunch hour melt down, and tried to talk to the very busy chef, got chewed out and, evidently, felt only tolerance and compassion for the chef for their not realizing how wonderful he was, is very revealing.

David Lebovitz, a retired chef now living in Paris, takes us on a delightful chocolate adventure. He shares tips on chocolate shops, bakeries, and other eating spots in Paris and shares his own recipes. He includes much more than chocolate. I've followed his receipes for hot cholcolate, chocolate macaroons and bread salad and received many compliments from my guests. I bought the book because I have an upcoming trip to Paris. On that trip, I will try out several of his recommendations for places to eat.

After traveling to Paris for the first time in February 2009, I often find myself day-dreaming of picking up and moving to the amazing "City of Lights." David Lebovitz shares his experience doing just that in this wonderful book. It's witty, charming, and while reading it you'll taste the foods that Paris is so famous for. He brings the city to life...both the good and the quirky! If you're a foodie or simply love Paris, you'll fall in love with this book...and have plenty of laughs along the way!

The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City

Over All Rating Reviews :
This is a great book, full of sharp (often self-deprecating) wit, astute cultural observations, and very good (often surprisingly easy) recipes.

The root of good humor is serious issues, and the book is grounded in loneliness, alienation and the quest for good food (if you don't think this is serious, ask Parisians). Lebovitz first realizes he's become Parisian when he puts on a fresh ironed shirt and nice pants just to walk downstairs to deposit a bag of trash. Apparently clothes are continually judged there. He also refers to a series of commercials for a newspaper, Le Parisian Publicite, which very humorously portray Parisians' self-centeredness. At the same time, he continually humiliates himself as he inadvertently mangles the language, e.g. a one-syllable mistake that leads him to repeatedly refer to a male body part without realizing it.

The interspersing of recipes is not only useful but makes for a good read. As Lebovitz is a cookbook author (he mentions the time he spends testing recipes) and former pastry chef, they fit smoothly into the narrative. Often I'd end up reading a recipe before bed and making it the next day. Thus far I've tried the mousse (quite easy--it's considered a basic dessert in France), the macaroons (unbelievably good) and the socca (chick pea crepes). While I enjoy Lebovitz's The Perfect Scoop as well, the sheer quantity of recipes can be overwhelming. I hope to actually make a good percentage of the recipes in The Sweet Life in Paris, especially considering Lebovitz seems to have included many of his favorites.

By the end of the book, Lebovitz isn't sure if he's more Parisian or American. Parisians (a unique group within France, just as New Yorkers are in the U.S.) still occasionally perplex him, but he often feels even more out of place among Americans.

This would be a great book to read if you're planning a trip to Paris, if you love tasteful (not cloying) dessert recipes, or if you just want to have fun learning more about Paris (and, by comparison, the U.S.).

It is so rare for a book to be just what you want it to be---this is one of those times! I had not consciously been aware of the author until recently when I stumbled on his blog. Read a few entries, read a few more, noted there were books involved and jumped on the current one. I can't wait to try many of the recipes and I have so enjoyed his wit and style as he describes Paris life for those of us who can only dream about it.

I follow the blog that David Lebovitz publishes most days of the week (well, many days of the week any any rate) his updates come to my igoogle home page and are a welcome treat every time. So I knew David's very accessible prose style and his keen interest in food (especially the sweet things of the culinary world) so I was very interested to get my hands on *The Sweet Life In Paris.* The book does not disappoint! Part cookbook, part autobiography and part study of the cultural mores of living in Paris and living with the French - I found I could not put the book down. There are many surprising and odd observations and much wit and humor - and I have great luck with David's recipes too - which are not limited to sweets but feature all courses from breakfast to late-night snack time and all sorts of foods. I must admit I live David's life in Paris vicariously and what a gift that is!

Purchase The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City

Over All Rating Reviews :
This is the first David Lebovitz book that I've purchased and now I'm a fan for life. David is funny, irreverent, witty, smart and observant. His story of leaving the States and moving to his adopted city of Paris is wonderful and inspiring. I loved all the background stuff on mastering the craft while working at the famous Chez Panisse in Berkeley. This is a real foodie's memoir -- meals remembered, life stories told in a series of food vignettes, etc. I love the way Lebovitz "explains" each recipe, setting it up in a way that makes you want to literally gallop to the kitchen and whip up some kind of something. The brownies made with confiture de lait (dulce de leche) are to die for. As are most of the recipes in this book. It's a wonderful read and you won't want it to end. More, David, more!

This made it on my top 10 list of 2009 for SFWineChef.com. I really wasn't expecting too much out of this book, yes I love his blog and read it whenever I can fit it in, but this was a nonstop chuckle fest. There were no holds barred in his writing of like in Paris, the recipes were fantastic, and I just can't bring myself to take it off of my night stand!
