From page 1 to 160 the collection of family receipes and reflections were put together with pride and love. Each receipe was a step back to my own family memories around the table as I grew up. Where To Buy The Sweet Potato Queens' Big-Ass Cookbook (and Financial Planner)

Over All Rating Reviews :
Finally! A book of financial advice that I can understand and live by.
As a southernjewel, born with a queenly crown upon my pretty auburn haired head, I swear the majority of recipes in this book I had growin up. And if I didn't? Then I will be serving them upon the next gathering I have.
The wit and wisdom of my proud southern heritage shows through in her writing.
The female friendships she holds so dear are the same as those that I hold close to me.
AND the love she feels for BoPeep as I do for my brood of three, along with the journey of nursing 24/7 is the same as this southern woman.
A treasure trove of quotes that I would love to claim as mine, but will gladly share as give her the due she has coming!

I enjoyed this as much as the first one, more than her second book and will clearly buy a fourth when it comes out!

Take care and enjoy this book!

The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City

Over All Rating Reviews :
This is a great book, full of sharp (often self-deprecating) wit, astute cultural observations, and very good (often surprisingly easy) recipes.

The root of good humor is serious issues, and the book is grounded in loneliness, alienation and the quest for good food (if you don't think this is serious, ask Parisians). Lebovitz first realizes he's become Parisian when he puts on a fresh ironed shirt and nice pants just to walk downstairs to deposit a bag of trash. Apparently clothes are continually judged there. He also refers to a series of commercials for a newspaper, Le Parisian Publicite, which very humorously portray Parisians' self-centeredness. At the same time, he continually humiliates himself as he inadvertently mangles the language, e.g. a one-syllable mistake that leads him to repeatedly refer to a male body part without realizing it.

The interspersing of recipes is not only useful but makes for a good read. As Lebovitz is a cookbook author (he mentions the time he spends testing recipes) and former pastry chef, they fit smoothly into the narrative. Often I'd end up reading a recipe before bed and making it the next day. Thus far I've tried the mousse (quite easy--it's considered a basic dessert in France), the macaroons (unbelievably good) and the socca (chick pea crepes). While I enjoy Lebovitz's The Perfect Scoop as well, the sheer quantity of recipes can be overwhelming. I hope to actually make a good percentage of the recipes in The Sweet Life in Paris, especially considering Lebovitz seems to have included many of his favorites.

By the end of the book, Lebovitz isn't sure if he's more Parisian or American. Parisians (a unique group within France, just as New Yorkers are in the U.S.) still occasionally perplex him, but he often feels even more out of place among Americans.

This would be a great book to read if you're planning a trip to Paris, if you love tasteful (not cloying) dessert recipes, or if you just want to have fun learning more about Paris (and, by comparison, the U.S.).

I have had this cookbook for approximately 1 year, and I bought it for its beauty and nostalgia. This Thanksgiving, however, I wanted to try a new recipe for Sweet Potato Pie, and I used this one.
This was, HANDS DOWN, the BEST sweet potato pie that I have EVER made.
It was WONDERFUL, and I am going to pass this recipe, and this book, down to MY daughter.
God bless you for sharing the good food and the memories.

Lowest Price Screen Doors and Sweet Tea: Recipes and Tales from a Southern Cook

Over All Rating Reviews :
I just recently purchased this cookbook and as a lifetime southern cook, I found it to be an outstanding representation of our southern food. The stories and history included are fantastic. The photography is gorgeous. And, yes, the recipes are atypical of true southern cooking.

There are a couple of very unfair 1-star and 2-star review ratings about this cookbook and frankly in my humble opinion, they both should be totally disregarded.

All of the authors named in one 1-star review are cookbook authors who are from the same area of the south as the reviewer - as if to say that those are the only southern states that can offer authentic southern cooking! I beg to differ. This cookbook has fantastic and very authentic southern recipes in it and, in fact, this cookbook has many of the very same recipes in the other cookbooks that reviewer names!! It is not a fair review of this book, and I suspect he has not even read this cookbook. While I am a Mississippi gal just as Ms. Foose, I did not know of her prior to ordering her cookbook, and I would never go so far as saying she is better than any of the other authors Mr. Holmes names in his 1-star post, but certainly her recipes are just as good.

As to the other 1-star review, that at least sounds like that reviewers personal opinion, but the 2-star review? Well, all I can say about that snobbish attitude is I have a feeling that reviewer would not be happy with ANY southern cookbook if she would say something such as "perhaps I'd had enough of that Southern-fried folksy story-tellin' stuff" and then go on to slam Paula Deen and the Sweet Potato Queens. Well, perhaps she just simply was having a bad day, since that "story-tellin' stuff" is what the south is made of. (Could that reviewer really even BE from anywhere in Mississippi?? Bless her heart.)

Ms. Foose's book Screen Doors and Sweet Tea is a beautiful book, full of great southern recipes, beautiful photography, great stories and history you'll love and some pretty fantastic notes and tips to boot.

Bottom line ... if you want a southern cookbook to add to your collection, this is worth every penny, would be an excellent addition and I am sure you would not be at all disappointed if you love all things about the South.

I stumbled upon this book on Amazon and was intrigued by the other reviewer's mention of Red Velvet Cake. I put the book on my "Wish List" and then searched for it at the library. When I got it home, I thoroughly enjoyed looking through it. I was about a quarter of the way through when I decided that I definitely want to own this one, so it's staying on my "Wish List." It is so rare for a book to be just what you want it to be---this is one of those times! I had not consciously been aware of the author until recently when I stumbled on his blog. Best Screen Doors and Sweet Tea: Recipes and Tales from a Southern Cook

Over All Rating Reviews :
Any time of the year that I pick up this lovely book, I am transported to a place and time. It looks like this: I'm wearing a pastel-colored cotton dress, my hair is newly washed and hanging down my back, the rocking chair I am sitting in, on Great Aunt Sallie's screened-in back porch, is slowly creeping across its gray-painted wooden floor. I hear her dog (sleeping at my feet) chasing a rabbit in his dreams and I (impatiently) wait for Aunt Sallie to bring me the latest confections that will soon be coming out of her oven, judging by the intoxicating smell of sugar and butter that fill the air. This book takes me back to this time as an 8-year old Southern girl.

As a typical Boomer, I went through lots of changes during the 60's. Now, looking over the cubicle wall at retirement, this charming book takes me back to a time when I can see my mother's white gloves saved for Sunday church or a funeral. I hear my dad poking holes in the lid of a mayo jar so my brother and I can catch fire-flies on a summer evening. I remember entering my aunts' homes (had lots of aunts!) and not understanding when they said, "Oh, my house is such a mess today," and everything seemed to be in perfect order to me. I remember the first bridal shower tea to which my mother took me, thinking I might finally be mature enough to attend. I watched the rites and formalities of things like silver punch bowls, how the punch cups must be set out in a line, the pastel beauty of fragrant round mints in a cut-glass bowl, and wondering if I would ever fit into this dignified, orderly lady-like world when I felt such a tomboy at the time.

Now, thanks to Martha's book, I can re-enter that clean, polite tucked-in-with-a-kiss-at-night world where almost everyone was called Miss Flossie or Miss Rowena or Miss Callie once their hair turned white, no matter how many grandchildren they had. The final truth came to me at the age of 13 one Thanksgiving. My father entered the kitchen peopled by my mother, two of her sisters (all over 50) and a non-relative everyone just called Aunt Mac (60 or 70+ years old.) Daddy said, "How are you girls coming? Will we be eating soon?" I broke out laughing and questioned, "Girls???" The women all silently turned and glared at me while my father explained, "No matter how many birthdays a lady has, she is always a girl." Having become A Lady of a Certain Age, I can testify to the fact that I am still a girl and this book helps me re-enter, re-call and re-live that time. Thank you, Martha, for your breath of fresh air and making me wish I had paid more attention now during those teas, showers and dinners.

Cheapest The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City

Over All Rating Reviews :
I follow the blog that David Lebovitz publishes most days of the week (well, many days of the week any any rate) his updates come to my igoogle home page and are a welcome treat every time. So I knew David's very accessible prose style and his keen interest in food (especially the sweet things of the culinary world) so I was very interested to get my hands on *The Sweet Life In Paris.* The book does not disappoint! Part cookbook, part autobiography and part study of the cultural mores of living in Paris and living with the French - I found I could not put the book down. There are many surprising and odd observations and much wit and humor - and I have great luck with David's recipes too - which are not limited to sweets but feature all courses from breakfast to late-night snack time and all sorts of foods. I must admit I live David's life in Paris vicariously and what a gift that is!

Catalog Screen Doors and Sweet Tea: Recipes and Tales from a Southern Cook

Over All Rating Reviews :
Written from the perspective of a cook living in the Mississippi Delta, this book aims to depict tasty meals and a laid back lifestyle. Texas born and raised in the big city, I envy such a lifestyle even with knowing that it isn't always what it is purported to be. Pictures never capture the oppressive heat and humidity or the sheer joy of a cloud of gnats descending upon you.

The cookbook opens with a section titled "Mailbox Happy hour and Pick-up Party Food." Or, as I would call it, "appetizers and booze." Drinks made with alcohol and small finger foods guide these recipes and occasional color pictures. Little sections of commentary or background lead into these easy to make recipes along with notes (tips) on how to make items. And of course, there is the obligatory "Deviled Egg" recipe complete with paprika along with some more complicated recipes such as "Red Drum Starter" and "Inland Prawn Toast."

"Luncheons, Salads and Dressings" is the next section. Along with recipes for tasty "Chicken Salad, Frozen Cucumber Salad," and "Three Bean Salad," there are ones for "Homemade Mayonnaise" and "Pimento Cheese" spread. There are many others in this section and certainly something here is going to work for somebody.

The next section is "Gumbos, Soups, Dumplings and a Bisque." Pretty much obvious by the name what is covered in this chapter. Lots of good things here like "Seafood Gumbo, Curried Sweet Potato Soup, Monday Red Beans and Rice" and many others. The bisque is a recipe for "Belzoni Crawfish Rice and Corn" and is found on pages 84 and 85. There is even a recipe for "Turtle Soup" using the large alligator snapping turtles along with a warning about checking with your state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries regarding trapping regulations.

"Dishes From the Backyard and Kitchen" come next and involve chicken, turkey, poultry, pork in a variety of ways, steak, ribs, etc. The recipes include "Proper Fried Chicken, Double Cut Pork Chops, Blue Cheese Porterhouse" and many others. If it were me, I'd save the blue cheese for the dressing on my salad, the sour cream for my potato, and eat the steak well done without anything on it. That is after cooking it over a wood fire under a blue Texas sky next to a lake. But, that is just me.

The book then moves on to sides and these aren't simple mashed potatoes, or string beans with a dollop of butter. In "Field Peas, Greens, Sides and the Like" the recipes are for things like "Crumb Cauliflower " (which just might make the stuff edible) "Green Chile Rice, Succotash, Corn and Red Pepper Pudding" along with many more. And yes, there is the obligatory sweet potato recipe.

"Hot From the Oven" should have been titled "Biscuits and More" or something straight forward along that line. The recipes cover various items such as "Apron String Biscuits" (with Red-Eye Gravy or Tomato Gravy) Sweet Potato Biscuits, Blue Cheese Pecan Bread, Delta Cream Doughnuts" and many others. Just looking at the pictures of these items can cause your waistband to spontaneously expand.

The next chapter "The Sweetest Things" doesn't help that at all. Deserts such as "Banana Pudding, Lemon Icebox Pie" (my grandmother recipe was and is better), "Silent Shade Cobbler" and numerous others are covered and include recipes for sherbet and ice cream.

This 284 page delectable cookbook closes with an index and author acknowledgement. It is a book filled with numerous color photographs, many of the area and not of the food, good recipes, plenty of tips and information and a liberal dash of humor.

My only quibble with this book is the lack of dietary information. There is nothing in this book about salt content, fat grams, or any of the rest of it. I suspect the numbers are quite high, per serving, in many cases but the book doesn't address that in any way. Considering the increasing obesity epidemic and growing media attention to health issues, this very good book would have been markedly better if that information had been included.

Where To Buy Cider: Making, Using & Enjoying Sweet & Hard Cider, Third Edition

Over All Rating Reviews :
This book seems most appropriate for someone who wants to have their own orchard AND make cider. A lot of the information is all about planting and establishing an orchard leaving little real estate to actually talk about making cider. It was a little disapointing to me because I was expecting it to be the cider equivalent of Home Cheese Making: Recipes for 75 Delicious Cheeses or Charcuterie: The Craft of Salting, Smoking, and Curing, which talk about how to make these products in an artisanal fashion but not about the raising of the animals.

The bottom line is this, if you're interested in opening your own orchard and going through the whole process from seed to bottle this could be valuable. However, if you're only interested in cidermaking you will find that a lot of the book is dedicated to growing apple trees and not specifically to making great cider.

I don't know how Ms. Greenspan charmed these renowned bakers into giving her their treasured recipes. Her descriptions of the bakeries are so evocative that photographs are not needed; all you need is your imagination. If you are interested in food or on your way to Paris, you should read this book. When you return from Paris after having tasted all those wonderful pastries and breads, you'll be able to relive the experience again in your own kitchen. There are a variety of recipes given, most basic enough for the average home baker, some requiring a little more effort. A sweet book indeed.

I've read through Paris Sweets and plan to bake my way through it too :-) Dorie Greenspan has a love for her subject and a way with prose that will make you wish you could tour the pastry shops of Paris at her side. I've made the almond cake (aka Montmartre Square; yummy) and the Strawberry Marshmallows (if you try anything in here, try those) and am in love. The Fresh Strawberry and Marshmallow Tart is next on my list, and until then the anecdotes and adorable illustrations keep me glued. Thanks, Dorie!

Weinstock's recipe for yellow butter cake was worth the price of the book. I'm not an experienced baker but was able to follow her recipe without a hitch. Over All Rating Reviews :
I have used several recipes from Ms Greenspans book and find the majority to be tasty and easy to make. I also liked the cultural "tidbits" that the author includes with each recipe. The only thing that some people might find intimidating is that several of the recipes call for blanched almonds. You can buy blanched almonds in the bulk food section of your grocery store, or you can blanche your own. To blanche almonds, place almonds in boiling water for 3 to 5 min. . Take almonds out of boiling water and place in cold water for 5 to 10 min. . Squeeze almonds out of their skins with your thumb and fore finger and discard skins. I have found that one pound of blanched almonds will make about three of the cookie recipes in Paris Sweets
